What it is

Establishing who a user is, which organisation they act for, and what they are permitted to do — across web, mobile and machine clients.

Why we chose it

Authentication is a bad place to be original. We use Clerk when a product needs organisations, invitations and social sign-in without staffing them, and Better Auth when the requirement is to keep users in our own database or to run more than one independent auth realm in a single system. Both give us sessions that work the same way in a server-rendered page and a native app. Authorisation, unlike authentication, stays in our code and close to the data, because it is the part that is genuinely specific to a business.
